What is happening?
Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association (AVCGA) are being integrated into a single marine rescue service called Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) under the management of the Queensland Police Service (QPS).
When will this occur?
This will occur as a phased integration of units over a period of 12-18 months beginning in July 2024 with completion toward the end of 2025. This gradual integration of all units has been planned to ensure maximum support for each unit as well as continuous service to the community.
The first group of VMR and Coast Guard units (approx 10-11) will progress through transition during July/August 2024. There are a total of six groups altogether, and subsequent phases will see the remaining units transitioned region by region, with the process expected to be completed by October 2025.
VMR Whitsunday is in group FIVE, and we do not expect to begin the transition process until the middle of 2025.
What happens in the meantime?
It will be ‘business as usual’ until transition, with VMR Whitsunday operating in exactly the same way as it always has – volunteer-led, and dependent on sponsors, fundraising and paid memberships.
